While creating a new youth development poster for iOcean Trust recently, I came across a BBC article asking a simple but deeply thought-provoking question:
“What will people remember about you after you die?”
It stayed with me.
In today’s fast-moving world, where success is often measured by possessions, profit or social status, the article explored something far more meaningful — the idea of legacy. Not necessarily in wealth, but in the lives we touch, the values we pass on and the positive impact we leave behind.
At Villa Palmera, this resonated strongly with me because hospitality, at its heart, has never only been about accommodation. It is about connection, creating experiences, making people feel welcome and building spaces where memories are made.
But it also made me reflect on purpose beyond business.
Villa Palmera proudly supports iOcean Trust, a youth-focused initiative helping young people develop confidence, leadership, storytelling skills and work readiness through ocean-based learning, mentorship and creative opportunities. Alongside other generous donors and supporters, we believe investing in young people creates ripples far beyond the present moment.
Research increasingly shows that when people think about the legacy they want to leave behind, they often make decisions more aligned with kindness, environmental stewardship, community involvement and helping others. Purpose and contribution are also closely linked to emotional wellbeing and mental health.
For young people especially, understanding that their story matters can be transformative.
Through photography, shared experiences, leadership activities and community engagement, iOcean Trust encourages youth to think differently:
What values will guide your life?
How can you contribute positively to your community?
What impact will your actions have on future generations?
Perhaps true success is not simply what we accumulate during our lifetime, but what continues because we were here.
A photograph.
A story.
A lesson shared.
A person encouraged.
A coastline protected.
A young life inspired.
These are the things that quietly become legacy.
As both a business owner and someone passionate about community development, I believe there is something powerful in building businesses that contribute positively to society while also creating spaces where people reconnect with themselves, nature and one another.
Maybe symbolic immortality is simply this:
Knowing that a small part of your kindness, values and purpose continues in others long after you are gone.
And perhaps that is one of the most meaningful things we can all strive for.
